FUN AT THE BIG HOUSE
On Sunday, May 4, I joined local vendors, authors, dog and cat lovers at the BIG House in Huddleston, Virginia. Why? To raise funds for the Bedford Humane Society and to meet some of the sweet cats and dogs available for adoption.
John and Mary Boyer generously opened their 12,000 square foot mansion on Toler's Ferry Road for the event. A steady stream of folks toured the spectacular house. I heard many ohhhs, ahhhs, and gasps as people appreciated the details and beauty of the interior. The home's elevator delighted those who had trouble going up and down stairs.
I had so much fun. I visited with old acquaintances, made new friends, and met talented and smart and caring people. As always, I enjoyed talking with fellow authors Becky Mushko, Lorie Long, Jane Smith, and Karen Wrigley. And I sold some of my books, too.
Dogs and cats who were quartered outside greeted people interested in adopting. Bedford Humane Society cat/dog foster parents walked several of the dogs through the house. I noticed how calm and well mannered they were, even though in new and busy surroundings.
I sat in front of one of the numerous huge windows that graced the home. I liked my assigned spot, enjoyed watching and listening to the band stationed on the patio near the in-ground pool, chuckled at some of the leashed dogs' antics as they walked the 17-acre property.
Tons of hard work, organization and dedication went into this event. All I did was attend and enjoy myself. I appreciate so much the time and effort Humane Society volunteers put in to make Woofs N' Purrs a successful event. I hope that many dogs and cats were adopted or are being considered for adoption because of this.
